ISLAMABAD, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- A blast hit a police vehicle in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, leaving one policeman dead and three others injured, police said.
District Police Officer Wahid Mahmood said that an improvised explosive device went off near the police vehicle deployed for the security of polio workers in the Kulachi area of Dera Ismail Khan district of the province.
Rescue teams, police and security forces immediately reached the site following the blast and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital. The area has been cordoned off, while a search operation is underway to arrest the culprits.
Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan condemned the blast and directed the hospital authorities to provide the best possible treatment to the injured.
"The death of a policeman is extremely sad. We stand with the family of the policeman," Khan said.
No group has claimed the attack yet.
According to local media reports, Pakistan commenced its first nationwide polio vaccination campaign on Monday, targeting some 39.6 million children under the age of five and nearly 265,000 polio workers will go door-to-door to administer vaccines to children. Enditem
