GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-two recruits have joined Afghan Local Police (ALP) after completing military training in the country's eastern Ghazni province, the provincial government said Tuesday.

"The graduates joined the ALP forces in Jaghoury district of Ghazni, after receiving training on how to use arms, behave with local people and check vehicles and passengers at checkpoints," the government said in a statement.

The Afghan government established the ALP, or community police a decade ago, to protect villages and districts around the country where the army and police have limited presence.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes between security forces and Taliban militants for long.

"With the deployment of the new graduates in the local police ranks, the enemy momentum in the troubled areas of Jaghouri, bordering Zabul and Uruzgan provinces would be prevented," the statement added.

The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces remain in control of most of Afghanistan's population centers and all of 34 provincial capitals, but Taliban insurgents occupy large portions of rural areas, staging coordinated large-scale attacks against Afghan cities and districts from time to time.
