NEW DELHI, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Three militants were killed Wednesday in a fierce gunfight with government forces in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gunfight broke out in Tral area of Pulwama district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"In a fierce gunfight in Tral today early morning, three militants were killed," a senior police official posted in Pulwama said. "The operation was carried out jointly by the army, paramilitary and police."
According to police, the gunfight erupted after government forces cordoned off the area on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of the militants.
"No sooner the joint contingents of the army, paramilitary and police reached near the suspected area, the militants present there fired upon them, thereby triggering a gunfight," the police official said.
The slain militants were identified as local cadres.
