WINDHOEK, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has become the first African country to export beef to the U.S. market, spokesperson of the country's leading meat exporter Meatco said Wednesday.

The first shipment of beef will be dispatched to the United States Wednesday, Jethro Kwenani said in a statement.

Kwenani said that Namibia was granted access to the U.S. market in 2016 and in 2017, Meatco's factory went through a public health and assurance audit by the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Services.

"The audit, which is conducted every 18 months or two years, was carried out to verify whether Namibia remains in compliance with maintaining the required standards," said Kwenani.

Namibia's projected beef export volume to the United States is expected to start at about 862 metric tons, and will increase to about 5,670 metric tons by 2021. Enditem
