FRANKFURT -- Several people were killed in two shootings in the western German city of Hanau on Wednesday evening, according to German media reports.

UNITED NATIONS -- Nearly 3 million people in impoverished Niger, more than half of them children, are in need of assistance because of multiple, simultaneous emergencies, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Wednesday.

"The situation is exacerbated by instability in the region, including in neighboring countries, resulting in an influx of thousands of refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons and migrants, all needing access to basic social services and protection for survival," OCHA said.(UN-Niger-Children)

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy John Rood will be leaving office by the end of this month due to President Donald Trump's request, according to his resignation letter acquired by media on Wednesday.

UNITED NATIONS -- Geir Pedersen, UN special envoy for Syria, said Wednesday that realizing the dream of the Syrian people for peace has a long way to go, while once again calling on all warring parties to cease fire immediately in the country.

LONDON -- The British government earmarked 90 million pounds (about 117 million U.S. dollars) to tackle emissions from homes and heavy industry and fund Europe's first large scale and low carbon hydrogen plants, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy has said.

Of the whole package, 70 million pounds (90.6 million dollars) will be used to fund two hydrogen production plants near Liverpool and Scotland's Aberdeen respectively, and a project for developing technology to harness offshore wind to produce hydrogen from water using electrolysis, said the department.(Britain-Emission-Fund) Enditem
