UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyzstan's UN envoy on Thursday highlighted the work of geographical groups in helping bridge social gaps around the world on the occasion of the World Day of Social Justice.

Achieving social justice is an essential condition for meeting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the UN member states' work within the world body should be complemented by efforts at the regional and national levels, said Mirgul Moldoisaeva, permanent representative of Kyrgyzstan to the UN, at a meeting co-organized by her mission and the International Labour Organization.

The establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union in 2015 allowed Kyrgyzstan as well as Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia to open up new opportunities for achieving social justice, according to the envoy.

"The principles of developing a single labor market in the Eurasian Economic Union, such as mutual recognition of education and qualification documents as well as providing foreign workers with access to essential social services, make necessary contribution to ensuring employment and overcoming social isolation of the population," she said.

The envoy also pointed to the benefits of other regional associations established based on geographical features in this regard, including the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries and the Forum of Small States.

"Each of these groups of countries faces additional challenges related to achieving social justice, and that is why my country Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous country which has no access to the sea, is active in promoting dialogue and cooperation among the member countries that make a positive contribution to the issues of social justice," she said.

In 2007, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution, introduced by Kyrgyzstan, to designate Feb. 20 as the World Day of Social Justice. Enditem
