LOME, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Togo's incumbent President Faure Gnassingbe has won the presidential election that ended on Saturday by obtaining 72.36 percent of the vote, provisional results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed.

Gnassingbe is far ahead of other competitors, including former Prime Minister and former President of the National Assembly Messan Agbeyome Kodjo, who obtained 18.37 percent of the vote, and the former head of the opposition Jean-Pierre Fabre, who got 4.35 percent of the vote, the INEC said.

Based on the results, Tchambakou Ayassor, president of the INEC, said Gnassingbe, candidate of the Union for the Republic, was "provisionally elected" as Togo's president.

The provisional results will be submitted to the Constitutional Court, which will reveal the final outcome within days.

Gnassingbe has been in power since 2005 and is seeking a fourth term. Enditem
