RAMALLAH, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of Palestinian demonstrators clashed on Tuesday with Israeli soldiers at an Israeli army roadblock on a road leading to the Jordan Valley in the West Bank, medical and security sources said.
Palestinian security sources said that around 1,000 Palestinians tried to cross an Israeli army roadblock to reach the Jordan Valley, adding that the soldiers at the checkpoint prevented them from entering.
Clashes broke out when Palestinian demonstrators threw stones at the soldiers who then fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters.
Medical sources in the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said that at least 40 demonstrators were injured and five of them were hospitalized after being shot by gunfire.
Motaz Bsharat, in charge of the Jordan Valley's affairs in the province of Tubas in the West Bank, told Xinhua that the Israeli army forces prevented people from reaching the Jordan Valley area.
He said several Palestinian anti-settlement and anti-wall groups called earlier for protests in the Jordan Valley area against the Israeli government's plans of expanding settlements and annexing the territory. Enditem
