RIO DE JANEIRO, March 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the shipwreck that occurred on Saturday on the Amazon River in northern Brazil has reached six, authorities said on Sunday.

Authorities said that the rescue team led by the Navy will continue to search for more victims.

The ship left Amapa state for neighboring Para state on Friday evening and capsized on the Amazon River early on Saturday morning.

Authorities initially reported 16 people went missing. As the vessel did not have a passenger list, the real number of the missing is unknown.

The boat was transporting 60 to 70 people at the time of the accident, much below its maximum capacity of 242. Authorities said the vessel, named Anna Karoline III, was authorized to transport both passengers and cargo.

The cause of the accident remains unclear and there will be an investigation into this.

Survivors said it was windy at the time, which caused some passengers to fall into the river. Enditem
