YAOUNDE, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-three inmates escaped on Sunday from a prison in Yagoua, a town in Cameroon's Far North region, police said on Monday.
The prisoners managed to break the prison's main gate and rushed out, police said.
Seventeen of the escapees were recaptured Monday afternoon "thanks to collaboration from the local population," according to local authorities.
A manhunt has been launched for the rest of the prisoners, according to the police.
The Boko Haram terror group are known to be operating near the locality, and some Boko Haram militants are held in the prison.
It is unclear if any of the militants are among those who escaped. Enditem
