GABORONE, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Botswana's government, through the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC), has taken a decision to cancel all planned external travel of Botswana's national teams and the hosting of any international teams until further notice.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the government took this as a precautionary measure to protect athletes from possible infection by the outbreak of the coronavirus and reduce its possible spread to Botswana.
The government said the decision was made considering the serious consequences of the infection of Botswana athletes and the risk to the entire nation.
It is important that Botswana sports plays it's part and acts responsible in the midst of the health crisis.
The statement further said that travel restrictions will remain in force until further notice and the situation will continue to be monitored and the government will seek appropriate medical advice.
The statement comes after the Botswana Football Association (BFA) announced on Monday that the country's Under 17 women's national team will not travel to Morocco for the second leg of their World Cup qualifier over fears of the Coronavirus outbreak.
Botswana lost 1-0 in the first leg in Gaborone in February. Morocco has so far registered two cases of the virus. Enditem
