UNITED NATIONS, March 12 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy on Thursday called on Yemeni parties to agree on a ceasefire as soon as possible.

Recently there has been military escalation in many parts of Yemen, undermining UN mediation efforts and political dialogue among all parties, said Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations.

"Under such circumstances, it is imperative that all parties in Yemen strengthen their political will and agree on ceasefire arrangements as soon as possible so as to create conditions to restart comprehensive political negotiations," Zhang said.

The only way to end the Yemeni conflict is a UN-led comprehensive and inclusive political process. The hard-won Stockholm Agreement and the Riyadh Agreement should be implemented effectively, he told the UN Security Council.

The signatories to the agreements should honor their political commitment; regional countries should step up their mediation efforts; the United Nations should continue to play its constructive role, said the Chinese envoy.

He said China is concerned about the humanitarian situation in Yemen. The Yemeni people face multiple difficulties, such as violence, foot and commodity shortages, lack of medical services, and natural disasters.

All parties in Yemen should fully cooperate with the humanitarian relief operations of the United Nations and relevant agencies, and provide humanitarian access, he said.

Zhang expressed the hope that UN humanitarian agencies will follow closely the locust situation and the spread of COVID-19 in Yemen and provide support and assistance to Yemeni people.

China supports the Yemeni government's efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and has been providing emergency food aid, medical devices and other assistance to the Yemeni people through bilateral and multilateral channels, he said.

China will continue to work to help Yemen embark on the path of peace and development, Zhang said. Enditem
