LAGOS, March 14 (Xinhua) -- An outbreak of cholera has killed 21 people with 155 cases reported in Nigeria's southeast state of Ebonyi, a government statement said late Friday.

The ministry of water resource, which made the announcement, said it was carrying out assessment and sensitization as well as awareness on water safety in the affected communities in response to the outbreak.

The ministry said a response team, inaugurated on Friday will be responsible for sustaining the campaign against poor practices that expose the people to cholera and other water-related diseases within the affected area.

The statement said the team will also carry out hygiene promotion in the affected communities as a measure to reduce the risk of disaster.
