TOKYO, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower on Tuesday, tracking losses on Wall Street overnight where the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its worst point drop in history and sunk to its lowest level in nearly three years amid a global rout.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 399.45 points, or 2.35 percent, from Monday to 16,602.59.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 26.56 points, or 2.15 percent, at 1,209.78.
All industry categories retreated, with marine transportation, construction and metal product issues comprising those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell. Enditem
