PHNOM PENH, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Ministry of Health said on Tuesday that nine more people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of the confirmed cases in the kingdom to 33.

The new patients included six Cambodian men who have returned to Cambodia after attending a mass religious ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and three Malaysian men who have come to southwest Cambodia's Kep province from Malaysia, the ministry said in a statement.

It said among the Cambodian patients two are in Phnom Penh and one each in Siem Reap, Kampong Chhnang, Koh Kong, and Tboung Khmum provinces.

The patients in Phnom Penh have been quarantined for treatment at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, as those in other provinces have been placed in isolation rooms in respective provincial hospitals.

A total of 79 Cambodians took part in the religious ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Feb. 29 and 19 of them tested positive for COVID-19, the statement said, adding that the health authorities are locating the rest of them.

In a bid to curb the spread of the virus, the Southeast Asian country on Tuesday ordered the closure of all KTV or karaoke clubs, night clubs, cinemas, and museums across the kingdom. The country also banned all kinds of religious gatherings and concerts at public areas.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen issued a directive on Sunday advising people to avoid non-essential travels to Europe, the United States and Iran.

"For civil servants and Cambodian people who have just returned home from countries in Europe, the United States and Iran, they must self-isolate for 14 days from the day of their arrivals to Cambodia," he said.

Moreover, the kingdom has banned foreigners from Italy, Germany, Spain, France and the United States from entering the country for 30 days, effective from March 17, and from Iran, starting from March 18.

On Monday, the Ministry of Education allowed all public and private school students across the country to take an early vacation, providing online teaching to them through its website and social media platforms. Enditem
