BRUSSELS, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel declared Tuesday "a state of emergency" for three months to contain the spread of novel coronavirus.

The aim is to facilitate the implementation of certain decisions without following the usual legislative procedure, Bettel said at the Chamber of Deputies, the country's 60-member parliament.

Under the state of emergence, the borders are being monitored, but there is no guarantee that they will remain open.

"Stay at home," said Bettel. "This is the rule. Don't go out except for urgent and unavoidable trips."

Luxembourg has reported a total of 140 coronavirus infections since detecting its first case on February 29. To date, one person has died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Enditem
