HELSINKI, March 17 (Xinhua) -- The Finnish government on Tuesday used the fast track option of the Emergency Powers Act to order immediate control of the country's reserves of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.

It took effect without submission to the parliament.

The Finnish lawmakers have begun to debate the emergency powers decrees submitted by the government. If passed, Finnish external borders will be closed on Thursday and schools shut down on Wednesday to prevent the COVID-19 from further spread in the country.

Anna-Kaisa Pekonen, minister of social affairs and health, said at a televised press conference that no shortage exists. Finnish officials have said earlier that the country is well prepared as medical reserves stockpiling has been required by the law.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin told the press conference that while the borders of Finland was expected to be closed on Thursday, travel restrictions inside the country will not be imposed, but could be necessary later. Necessary work-related travel in and out of Finland will also be allowed.

Only the airports of Helsinki, Turku and Mariehamn will remain open for international air services. Freight services will not be restricted. Shipping companies have said that some Baltic ferries in and out of Finnish ports will continue operating as they also carry freight.

While Finnish citizens staying abroad were advised to return home, the government noted that those with residence permits in a foreign country can remain there. Enditem
