BERLIN, March 18 (Xinhua) -- German healthcare company Fresenius increased sales by 6 percent to 35.5 billion euros (38.6 billion U.S. dollars) in 2019 year-on-year, the company announced in its financial report published on Wednesday.

While earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) decreased by two percent to 4.6 billion euros, net income remained unchanged at 1.9 billion euros. Fresenius exceeded its previous year's figures for the 16th consecutive year and set a new record for both sales and earnings.

"2019 was another successful year for Fresenius. We continued to grow, and we set important markers for the future," commented CEO Stephan Sturm.

In 2019, Fresenius primarily invested in the modernization and expansion of its dialysis clinics, which now number almost 4,000 locations worldwide, its production facilities as well as hospitals and day clinics.

Fresenius announced Wednesday that it would take over the Frankfurt software developer Digital Health Group (DGG) through its subsidiary Curalie to create an open platform, which would support patients with digital assistance.

Driving the digitalization of healthcare, Fresenius also launched the Helios Patients Portal, an online platform that offers a range of services, from making appointments online to accessing test results.

For the fiscal year 2020, Fresenius expects sales to increase by 4 to 7 percent while net income would rise by 1 to 5 percent. While the impact of the global spread of the coronavirus remained undetermined by Fresenius, CEO Sturm emphasized the "special responsibility" as a healthcare company.

"We are doing everything we can to protect our employees, maintain production and deliveries, and ensure that our patients continue to receive the best possible care," said Sturm. Enditem
