ISLAMABAD -- Calling the novel coronavirus a "Chinese virus" is absolutely absurd and inhumane at a time when a globalized world needs cooperation, not denigration, said a political and international relations analyst.

"Rather than making mockery of the Chinese nation or calling the virus 'made in China', the world must learn from the miraculous measures China has adopted to defeat this invisible enemy," Yasir Masood, former director of media and publications at the Center of Excellence of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, told Xinhua in a recent interview.

TRIPOLI -- Spokesman of the UN-backed Libyan government's forces, Mohamed Gonono, on Wednesday said that the UN-backed government's forces repelled an attack of the eastern-based army in south of the capital Tripoli.

"Our forces dealt with a new breach of the cease-fire by the militias of the war criminal Haftar (commander of eastern-based army), which used motor shells in the highly-populated Ain Zara area (southern Tripoli)," Gonono said in a statement.

TEHRAN -- Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday said that U.S. would be responsible for the "destructive ramifications" of its unilateral sanctions against Iran as the country is fighting the COVID-19 outbreak.

"At a time when we, Iranians, normally celebrate Nowruz, our New Year concurrent with the arrival of spring, we are faced with multiple and historic challenges," Zarif said in a video released on Twitter on Wednesday.

SKOPJE -- North Macedonia's President Stevo Pendarovski declared a state of emergency on Wednesday to contain the spread of coronavirus in the country.
