Fire kills 6, injuries another 6 in Serbia

BELGRADE, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and six others injured in a fire in an apartment building in New Belgrade district of the Serbian capital city on Saturday.

According to local media reports, an apartment on the seventh floor of the nine-story building first caught fire on early Saturday morning and spread to the eighth and ninth floor. And emergency units were sent around 4 a.m.

"The intervention involved 30 firefighters with 11 vehicles," confirmed the Interior Ministry in a press release.

The cause of the fire is still unknown as the investigation is underway, but media reported that the apartment where the fire started was inhabited by an elderly person.

Reports also said that people living in that building were evacuated to safety during the fire-fighting operation that lasted around two hours.

Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic told Serbian national television that one firefighter sustained burn while trying to putting out the fire.

Serbia is currently in state of emergency over COVID-19. People older than 65 are banned to leave houses, and there is a ban of public gatherings so most people spend time indoors. Enditem
