NAIROBI, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's security service has moved to reassure that the country will be safe to stage the World Under-20 Athletics Championships despite the global threat of terrorism.

At least 120 countries and regions are expected to send their teams to Nairobi for the competition, which runs from July 7 to 12 in Nairobi, though there is a great fear that the championships will be postponed owing to the coronavirus outbreak.

Kenya's local organizing committee security teams have been touring various entry points.

In Mombasa, regional commissioner John Elungata said Kenya stands ready to thwart any terrorist attacks and host a safe competition.

"We have a well-equipped anti-terror police unit. We are always alert, and we have dealt with many threats and prevented several attacks. The World Under-20 championships are a priority for us and we can assure you that we have put measures in place to ensure we deal with every eventuality if and when it arises," Elungata said on Sunday.
