Medical students return to Maldives to assist in COVID-19 battle

MALE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-one Maldivian medical students studying overseas will return in a bid to assist the country in containing the COVID-19 pandemic, local media reported here Monday.
Government spokesperson Mabrook Azeez said at a press conference that 51 medical students in Nepal had made arrangements for returning to the country and would do so starting Tuesday.
The government had previously covered the expenses for 33 doctors to return from Nepal. An additional 10 doctors have arrived in the country at their own expense and they have to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine period.
The state-owned Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital has appealed to all healthcare workers who are retired or on leave to enlist in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Maldives has had 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with two of whom having made a full recovery.
The government has declared a 30-day State of Public Health Emergency and is taking measures to prevent further spread of the virus. Enditem
