MADRID, March 24 (Xinhua) -- A total of 514 people lost their lives to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, in Spain in the last 24 hours, the Spanish Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services confirmed at midday on Tuesday.

The total number of deaths in Spain rose to 2,696 on Tuesday from Monday's total of 2,182, while that of confirmed cases rose to 39,373 from Monday's total of 33,089 -- an increase of 6,284 compared to the 4,517-rise in the preceding 24-hour period.

Meanwhile, 3,794 people have now recovered, compared to 3,355 on Monday, while 2,636 are currently in intensive care wards.

Madrid continues to be the worst-hit region, with 12,352 cases and over 1,000 deaths.

In order to cope with the high number of deaths in the region, the Madrid Regional Authority said the Madrid Ice Rink (Palacio de Hielo) will be used as a temporary mortuary under joint management with the Spanish Military's Emergency Response Unit (UME).

The Palacio de Hielo is situated around two kilometers from the IFEMA exhibition center, which has been converted into a 5,500-bed field hospital and began receiving patients on Sunday. Enditem
