TOKYO, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares closed sharply lower Thursday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index losing more than 4 percent, as people in Tokyo have been requested to stay home this weekend amid a recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 882.03 points, or 4.51 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 18,664.60.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 25.30 points, or 1.78 percent, to finish at 1,399.32.
Iron and steel, marine transport and real estate issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play. Enditem
