NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks opened on an upbeat note Thursday despite data showing the number of jobless claims across the country had soared amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Shortly after the opening, the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 464.38 points, or 2.19 percent, to 21,664.93. The S&P 500 advanced 46.77 points, or 1.89 percent, to 2,522.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 127.83 points, or 1.73 percent, to 7,512.13. (US-Stocks-Rise)

GENEVA -- Seeing a very sharp decline in global trade, Roberto Azevedo, director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), on Wednesday said a global solution is needed to address the global challenge brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a video message published by the WTO, Azevedo admitted that "this pandemic will inevitably have an enormous impact on the economy, trade, and consequently on jobs and people's well-being." (WTO-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Friday after the Group of 20 nations vowed to inject 5 trillion U.S. dollars to minimize the social and economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter in the third or final estimate, unrevised from previous estimates, the U.S. Commerce Department reported Thursday.

In the third estimate, an upward revision to personal consumption expenditures (PCE) was largely offset by downward revisions to federal government spending and nonresidential fixed investment, according to a report released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. (US-GDP-Q4-Final) Enditem
