NAIROBI, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The Africa Cricket Association has postponed the inaugural Africa T20 Cup, which was due to be held in Nairobi this week.

With test-playing nations South Africa and Zimbabwe not set to compete, the continental tournament was to bring together eight teams from Uganda, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and hosts Kenya.

However, the ACA has canceled the tournament owing to the global Covid-19 epidemic.

"Be advised that to ensure the safety of all concerned, both domestically and internationally, we regret to advise that the ACA T20 Africa Cup Kenya 2020 has been postponed until further notice," the ACA said in a statement.

Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and Malawi had been placed in Group A, while hosts Kenya, Botswana, Mozambique and Cameroon were in Group B.

The tournament was meant to develop the game on the continent and expose the players to the world.

"This is to showcase African talents to the world and create a pathway to raise the game in Africa," the ACA said.

Kenya had canceled all international flights and suspended sport in the country to help slow the spread of coronavirus. So far, one person in the country has died of Covid-19 and 31 others have been infected and are in isolation in government health facilities in Nairobi.

"The ACA respects the decision of the government of Kenya and supports all efforts that safeguard the country against the possible entry of the coronavirus disease Covid-19. This decision has been taken by the ACA Board as well as in consultation with all the health ministries of the various countries," the ACA added. Enditem
