KIEV, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine registered a record high of 1 killed and 15 injured among civilians in eastern Ukraine this month, the agency's press service said on Facebook Thursday.

"From 1 to 22 March, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 16 civilian casualties: 1 killed and 15 injured. Several cases are still pending corroboration. Even though March is not over yet, this is already the highest monthly civilian casualties figures since September 2019," the message reads.

The mission, echoing the UN Secretary-General's appeal for a global ceasefire made on Wednesday, called upon parties involved in the hostilities in the east of the country to stop fighting.

"The call is even more urgent as we registered an increase in the number of civilian casualties in eastern Ukraine," the mission representatives said, noting the need for intensifying efforts to support the most vulnerable.

Earlier this week, the UN Secretary-General announced the launch of the Global Coronavirus Humanitarian Response Plan, which allocates 33 million U.S. dollars to fight COVID-19 in eastern Ukraine. The ongoing conflict in this part of the country, which started in April 2014, has killed some 13,000 people and wounded 30,000. Enditem
