Brunei reports 11 recoveries from COVID-19, new isolation center under construction

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Brunei reported that 6 more patients have recovered from COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the country's total recoveries to 11 cases.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, 1 new case of COVID-19 was confirmed on Friday, making the national tally stand at 115 cases. Two patients are in critical condition, requiring ventilator support, while 3 patients are under intensive care. The rest are in good health.

So far, a total of 1,140 individuals are undergoing quarantine, 874 people have completed the quarantine period and 4,994 laboratory tests for COVID-19 have been conducted, according to the health ministry.

Brunei government also revealed on Friday that a new national isolation center that can accommodate up to 170 beds in Tutong District is now under construction, which will increase the bed capacity of the country and treat COVID-19 patients in two to three weeks.

According to Haji Suhaimi, the Minister of Development, the current National Isolation Center in Tutong is already at 80 percent of its 136-bed capacity, and a new isolation center near the old one is vital to ensure Brunei has enough beds to handle more COVID-19 cases.

Some of the facilities at the new isolation center include isolated monitoring wards, X-Ray rooms, counseling and meeting rooms as well as on-call rooms for doctors and nurses.

A new virology lab is also under construction in Brunei to increase the country's COVID-19 testing capacity by 10 fold, Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah said.

In his special speech on COVID-19 pandemic broadcasted nationwide on March 21, the Sultan said that the Ministry of Health is trying to increase the capacity of medical staff and increase the virus testing capacity. Enditem
