CAIRO, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Egypt said on Saturday that six more people died from COVID-19, bringing the death toll of the pandemic in the country to 36.

Spokesman for Egyptian Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said in a statement that a 73-year-old Italian man and five Egyptians, all above 57 years old, have died from COVID-19.

The spokesman added that 40 new cases, including 39 Egyptians and a Jordanian national, have been confirmed, adding that all the new cases have contact with previously announced COVID-19 cases.

A total of 576 cases of the novel coronavirus have been reported in the country so far, said Megahed.

The spokesman pointed out that 121 cases have been discharged from quarantine hospitals.

Egypt has been recently taking strict precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, including night-time curfew, temporary closure of schools and universities, suspending flights, reducing employees and sterilizing public transport vehicles, government offices, hotels and tourist attractions.

Egypt also temporarily shut down mosques and churches nationwide, while coffee shops, clubs, malls, restaurants and other entertainment places were told to close from early evening to early morning over coronavirus concerns. Enditem
