Live COVID-19 updates: Spain records highest one-day COVID-19 death toll, U.S. cases top 120,000

BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The world is now in a battle against COVID-19, a disease caused by a previously unknown coronavirus that has spread to over 200 countries and regions.

The following are the updates on the contagious illness.

MADRID -- Spain saw the highest single-day fatalities from COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, with 838 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, showed the daily figures published by the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services on Sunday.

The death toll between Saturday and Sunday is six more than the previous tally between Friday and Saturday, bringing the total death tally to 6,528 since the first death in the country was confirmed on March 3.

Meanwhile, the country detected 6,549 new COVID-19 patients, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 78,797.

OUAGADOUGOU -- Burkina Faso's Minister of Transport, Urban Mobility and Road Safety, Vincent Dabilgou, has tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

Dabilgou is the sixth government minister confirmed to be infected by the novel coronavirus since the report of first COVID-19 case in Burkina Faso on March 9. The education minister, territorial administration minister, foreign minister, mining minister and trade minister also tested positive. The U.S. ambassador to Burkina Faso tested positive on March 22.

As of March 27, Burkina Faso has registered 207 cases positive for COVID-19, with 21 cured cases, and 11 death cases.

WASHINGTON -- The United States has reported more than 2,000 COVID-19 deaths, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE).

As of 6:40 p.m. on Saturday (2240 GMT), there were more than 121,000 confirmed cases in the United States, with 2,010 deaths, an interactive map maintained by the CSSE showed.

New York state's cases have topped 52,000, followed by states of New Jersey and California, with 11,124 and 5,065 cases respectively, according to the update.

HONG KONG -- Asia-Pacific countries kept reporting more COVID-19 infections and deaths on Sunday, as Indonesia saw the highest death toll in Southeast Asia, while Australia imposed stricter measures to contain the pandemic.

The Indonesian government said on Sunday the death toll of COVID-19 in the country climbed to 114, the highest in Southeast Asia. The number of confirmed cases jumped to 1,285, and 64 patients have recovered.

More venues in Australia are to be closed to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the country, while more stringent restrictions are put to public gatherings, said Australian Prime Minister (PM) Scott Morrison on Sunday evening. In addition to the institutions and businesses already closed last week, more public areas are to follow suit, including public playgrounds, outside gyms and skate parks. They are to be closed from Monday.

JERUSALEM -- Israel reported Sunday the 13th death from the novel coronavirus in the country, according to a statement by Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.

Earlier on Sunday, Israel's Ministry of Health said a total of 3,865 coronavirus cases have been diagnosed in Israel so far.

RAMALLAH -- Palestine on Sunday recorded six new cases of the COVID-19, bringing the total number of the cases to 104.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health earlier announced that it started to open new isolated quarantine centers in each West Bank district for discovering more infections.

BANGKOK-- Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on Sunday reported 143 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total infections to 1,388. The ministry also reported one more fatality, bringing the death toll to 7.

KUALA LUMPUR -- A total of 34 people have died of the COVID-19 in Malaysia as of Sunday with 150 newly confirmed cases, bringing the total to 2,470, said the Health Ministry.

DAKAR -- Senegalese Ministry of Health and Social Action reported Sunday morning 12 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the country's total number to 142 cases. Among the confirmed cases, 68 are imported ones.

On Monday night, Senegalese President Macky Sall declared a state of emergency from midnight Monday, along with a dusk-to-dawn curfew, effective from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day. Sall also banned public or private meetings of any kind, and ordered temporary closure of public places and meeting places.

Senegal has suspended all international passenger flights till April 17.

ACCRA -- The COVID-19 cases in Ghana has climbed to 152 as another 11 news cases were confirmed, Ghana Health Service (GHS) announced here on Sunday.

As of Sunday morning, a total of five deaths related to COVID-19 have been confirmed, GHS added.

As the COVID-19 cases on the rise, Ghana is scheduled to impose a partial lockdown in worst-hit regions including Accra and Kumasi from next Monday.

ADDIS ABABA -- The death toll from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the African continent has reached 134 as confirmed cases surpassed 4,282 as of Sunday, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) revealed.

The Africa CDC, specialized agency of the 55-member African Union (AU), in its latest situation update said the cases were spread across 46 African countries.

The continental disease control and prevention agency also disclosed that among the highly COVID-19 affected countries include South Africa with 1,170 confirmed cases, Egypt with 576 confirmed cases, Algeria with 454 confirmed cases, as well as Morocco with 402 confirmed cases.

TEHRAN -- With the 2,901 new confirmed cases over the past 24 hours, the total number of infected people with the novel coronavirus in Iran reached 38,309 on Sunday, reported official IRNA news agency.

Also, the number of people died from the disease reached 2,640 on Sunday, Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of Ministry of Health and Medical Education, was quoted as saying.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Sunday it received reports of 45 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland on Saturday, of which 44 were imported.

A new domestic case was reported in Henan Province, the National Health Commission said. Enditem
