India COVID-19 death toll rises to 27 as total cases reach 1,024

NEW DELHI, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The death toll due to COVID-19 in India Sunday evening rose to 27 as the number of confirmed cases reached 1,024, the federal health ministry said.

"Death toll related to novel coronavirus has reached 27," reads the information released by the ministry at 7:30 p.m. local time.

According to ministry officials, so far 96 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement, with the number of active cases in the country right now at 901, reads the information released by the ministry.

So far, Maharashtra state has reported the highest number of cases in India, at 186, followed by Kerala at 182.

On Sunday morning the number of COVID-19 cases in India was 979 and the death toll was 25.

Indian government Wednesday began a 21-day lockdown across the country in a bid to contain the spread of the pandemic. Authorities have imposed strict curfew-like restrictions to prevent the movement of people.

All road, rail and air services have been suspended in wake of the lockdown, except essential services that have been exempted.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday announced the setting up of an emergency relief fund to fight the epidemic and urged people to contribute generously. Enditem
