TRIPOLI, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Libya's National Center for Disease Control of the UN-backed government on Sunday announced five new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to eight.

The new infections have been detected in Misurata city, some 200 km east of the capital Tripoli, after a woman has been tested positive for the coronavirus, the center said.

The center tested 12 people who interacted with the infected woman, of whom seven tested negative and five tested positive for COVID-19.

The UN-backed government of Libya on Sunday issued a decision to ban movement between cities in order to fight the COVID-19.

Starting from March 29, the decision also extended the previously imposed curfew to start from 2 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The UN-backed government also restricted daily working hours in all agencies in the country starting from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

On March 24, Libya announced the first COVID-19 case in the country, a 73-year-old man who returned from Saudi Arabia.

The UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez Serraj recently declared a state of emergency and mobilization against the virus, as well as measures including closing airports, border crossings, education institutions and mosques, banning large gatherings, and imposing a curfew. Enditem
