Swiss tourism may suffer nearly 6.7-bln-USD loss from COVID-19: study

GENEVA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- The outbreak of COVID-19 in Switzerland may lead to 6.4 billion CHF (6.67 billion U.S. dollars) drop in tourism turnover in 2020, according to a study released on Monday.

The study, conducted by local institution Haute Ecole HES-SO Valais and revealed by local media on Monday, showed that the hotel sector alone could lose 2 billion CHF between March and May.

Switzerland is one of the world's most attractive tourism destinations. In 2017, the country's tourism sector generated total revenue of 44.7 billion CHF.

As the pandemic continues to develop in the country, the Swiss government has declared plans to provide 42 billion CHF for economic relief during the pandemic.

As of Monday morning, Switzerland has reported 15,475 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 1,201 more than the previous day. The death toll stands as at 295. (1 CHF = 1.04 U.S. dollars) Enditem
