TOKYO -- Japan's health ministry and local governments said that 2,183 people had been infected with the COVID-19 virus in Japan as of 8:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, with 78 new cases and seven deaths recorded in Tokyo, adding to pressure on the government to take further measures to curb the domestic spread of the virus.

The death toll in Japan from the pneumonia-causing virus currently stands at a total of 77 people, according to the health ministry, with the figure including those from the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama, close to Tokyo. (Japan-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- Japan on Tuesday raised its travel advisory to level 3 for around 50 countries, warning its citizens to avoid all travel to these regions amid the continued global spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The foreign ministry's latest travel advisory for 50 countries, including 21 in Europe, nine in the Middle East and Africa, seven in Southeast Asia and six in South America, is its second highest level and states that Japanese people should "avoid all travel regardless of purpose." HANOI -- Vietnam's GDP is expected to grow by 4.9 percent this year, about 1.6 percentage points lower than the previous projection, according to a latest World Bank report.

Despite favorable prospects for the Vietnamese economy in the medium term, the country's GDP growth will be affected negatively by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the World Bank said in a report titled "East Asia and Pacific in the Time of COVID-19," published on Monday. (Vietnam-GDP)

BANGKOK -- Thailand's Phuket International Airport will be shut from April 10 to 30 after Phuket Province sealed its entry points by land and sea amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana told the media on Tuesday that he ordered the closure of the airport as the total number of COVID-19 cases in the province rose to 62 on Monday with infections mostly found related to entertainment venues near Patong beach, normally packed with foreign tourists.
