ISLAMABAD, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani digital and industry professionals are of the view that the COVID-19 has pushed the world into adopting digital platforms for doing business, and the economies around the globe may see a new way of interacting, communicating and consuming content in the digital sphere once the pandemic wanes.

The impact of the disease at the domestic and international level has locked down communities into isolated environments, making the entire world go into digital incubation ecosystems, said Amir Jahangir, chief executive officer of Mishal Pakistan, a country partner institute of the World Economic Forum in an online discussion among notable experts on the possible futures with or without the COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Social distancing and lockdowns have forced into remote work and pushed people into digital meetings, Jahangir said, adding that "the work from home has led to an increase in all levels of digital consumption across all strata of the society."

"It has forced people to adopt tech and make it part of their business operations," Puruesh Chaudhary, a futurist and president of non-governmental organization AGAHI said, adding that this is the time that technology related businesses should be strengthening to ensure the "actions of today become the habits and norms of tomorrow."

Entrepreneurs and established businesses have an opportunity to recreate the business interactivity among customers, both being buyers and sellers to do more business in the digital space, she said.

During the discussion, Shabbir Buxamoosa, a senior industry professional and co-founder of Wusool, an enterprise focusing on digital payments, highlighted the need for the think tanks to create knowledge resources and enough evidence through data.

"This can push the policy makers and business leaders to create value in the changing times for the end consumers, while benefiting from the digital transformation, identifying new areas of growth for the industry and job creation for the economy," he said.

The participants agreed that the Pakistani government needs to take a lead in creating an enabling environment at this stage to encourage digital transformation.

Experts believe that the performance of the industry players and the regulatory bodies is vital under the evolving situation. They emphasized the need to have a watchdog on the performance of the regulatory bodies and the government, so it can perform more effectively. Enditem
