NEW DELHI, April 1 (Xinhua) -- India on Wednesday welcomed the formation of a team by the Afghanistan government for intra-Afghan negotiations.

According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, India has consistently supported an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled process for enduring peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.

"In this context, we view the formation of the team as a positive step which would lead to a peaceful and stable future for Afghanistan free from the scourge of externally sponsored terrorism," added the statement.

"We also call upon all sections of the political spectrum to work together to meet the aspirations of all people of Afghanistan, including those from the minority community, for a prosperous and safe future," it added.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's government last week announced a 21-member "inclusive" team to negotiate a sustainable peace and power sharing with the Taliban.

However, the Taliban refused to engage in talks with the team of negotiators, saying the Afghan government's move violated the insurgent group's peace-building pact with the United States, according to media reports. Enditem
