ALGIERS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday issued presidential pardon for 5,037 prisoners, the presidency said in a statement.

"President Tebboune has signed a presidential decree pardoning 5,037 prisoners and non-detained individuals who received final court rulings and whose sentence is 18 months away from being completed," the statement said.

The president also ordered a partial reduction of 18 months for prisoners whose remaining sentence is more than 18 months and equal to at least 20 years, it added.

Prisoners above 60 years old would benefit from a total and partial reduction of 24 months from the sentence.

The amnesty excludes prisoners convicted by military courts, as well as those convicted for terrorist crimes, treason, espionage, murders, as well as drug trafficking, parricide, poisoning, murders and rapes with or without violence against minors, in addition to all forms of corruption crimes.

The amnesty comes when Algeria is witnessing a rise in cases of COVID-19 which claimed so far 58 deaths and infected some 747 people. Enditem
