BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The world is now in a battle against COVID-19, a disease caused by a previously unknown coronavirus that has spread to over 200 countries and regions.

The following are the updates on the contagious disease.

WASHINGTON -- The United States became the first nation with more than 200,000 COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, according to a new tally from Johns Hopkins University.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a total of 203,608 confirmed cases have been reported in the United States, with 4,476 deaths, showed the tally updated by the university's Center for Systems Science and Engineering.

ROME -- Italy will remain under a nationwide anti-coronavirus lockdown until April 13, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said in a televised press conference on Wednesday evening.

The announcement came just two days before the current lockdown, which started on March 10, was due to end on April 3.

PARIS -- A total of 509 patients have died of coronavirus in French hospitals in the last 24 hours, bringing the toll to 4,032 since the start of the epidemic, Director General of Health Jerome Salomon announced on Wednesday.

A total of 56,989 people have been tested positive for coronavirus since the start of the epidemic. Among them, 24,639 are now hospitalized, an increase of 1,882 from Tuesday. Some 6,000 are in intensive care, an increase of 462.

ATHENS -- Greek Health Ministry spokesman Sotirios Tsiodras announced on Wednesday 81 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Greece in the last 24 hours and one new death.

Deaths toll rose to 50 since the start of the outbreak in the country on Feb. 26 while confirmed infections increased to 1,415, the spokesman said during a daily televised briefing on the epidemic.

BELGRADE -- Serbia reported 160 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, with five more deaths, the government stated in a press release.

According to the data of the Institute for Public Health in Belgrade, the disease was so far confirmed among 1,060 out of 4,371 tested patients.

BRASILIA -- Brazil on Wednesday reported the number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 rose from 5,717 to 6,836, with the death toll rising from 201 to 240, registering a 3.5-percent mortality rate.

According to the Health Ministry's website, in the past 24 hours, 1,119 new cases of infection were detected, slightly down from the 1,138 new cases reported in the previous 24-hour period.

JERUSALEM -- A total of 734 people in Israel were tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 6,092, the Israeli Ministry of Health said.

It also said the death toll of the virus in the country has reached 26, with six patients died on Wednesday, aged 66 to 98, all suffered from many other serious diseases.

LONDON -- The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Britain reached 29,474 as of Wednesday morning, an increase of 4,324 in 24 hours, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.

As of Tuesday afternoon, of those hospitalised in the country who tested positive for novel coronavirus, 2,352 have died, up 563 over the same time on the previous day, the latest figures from the department showed.
