BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The world is now in a battle against COVID-19, a disease caused by a previously unknown coronavirus that has spread to over 200 countries and regions.

The following are the updates on the contagious disease.

WASHINGTON -- More than 5,000 people in the United States have died of COVID-19, according to a new tally from Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday night.

The national death toll has reached 5,119, as the total number of confirmed cases has exceeded 215,000, the tally updated by the university's Center for Systems Science and Engineering has shown.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported that a patient passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection Thursday morning, who was the fourth death of COVID-19 in the country.

The patient, a 68-year-old male Indonesian national, who had a history of diabetes and hypertension and developed serious complications, was a Singapore Work Pass holder, and had been in Indonesia from Jan. 20 to March 16.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported 76 new confirmed and 13 new probable cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed and probable infections to 797 in the country.

There were no additional deaths and 92 people had recovered, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield from the Ministry of Health said at a press conference.

KABUL -- The Afghan authorities on Thursday confirmed 43 new COVID-19 cases, bringing to 239 the total number of patients in the country since the outbreak of the disease in mid February.

"Forty-one people, including 17 women and 24 men, were tested positive for COVID-19 in western Herat province and two people were infected in Kabul city," Wahidullah Mayar, spokesman of Ministry of Public Health, said in a statement.

NEW DELHI -- The death toll due to COVID-19 in India has risen to 41 as the number of confirmed cases in the country reached 1,834, the health ministry said Thursday.

"Until last evening, 41 deaths related to novel coronavirus have been recorded," reads the information released by the ministry.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia on Thursday confirmed one more case of COVID-19 in southwest Sihanoukville City, bringing the total number of the confirmed cases in the kingdom to 110, according to a Ministry of Health statement.

The new patient is a 58-year-old Cambodian hotel manager, who had direct contact with a group of French tourists, who had recently tested positive for the virus when they visited Sihanoukville City in the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk, the statement said.

LOME -- Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe has declared a three-month nationwide health emergency and major socio-economic measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I am addressing you in a very particular context where the world is faced with an unprecedented coronavirus-caused health crisis," Gnassingbe said in an address to the nation on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON -- The death toll from COVID-19 in the United States jumped by 884 over the past 24 hours, setting a new one-day record for the country, according to Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday evening.
