ADDIS ABABA, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia's confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 52 after eight more people were confirmed to have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday.

"We conducted medical tests on 264 people in the last 24 hours, in which eight of them were tested positive for COVID-19, eventually bringing the total number of cases to 52," said the Ethiopian Ministry of Health.

According to figures from the ministry, seven of the latest eight individuals were Ethiopian national -- five male and two female, while the remaining one was said to be a 30-years-old female Eritrean national.

Among the eight newly confirmed COVID-19 cases also include a nine-month-old Ethiopian, who is said to be the youngest confirmed COVID-19 case in the East African country.

The ministry, which disclosed that five of the patients to have contact with a previously confirmed case, also stressed that four of the total confirmed patients have so far recovered from the virus.

On Sunday, the east African country reported its first two deaths due to the COVID-19, in which the deceased include a 60-years-old female and 56-years-old male Ethiopian, who had been undertaking treatments.

The first case, who was said to be suffering from COVID-19 related illness for the last six days, had been in critical condition after being admitted to Eka Kotebe hospital in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and was under Intensive Care Unit treatment with "strict medical follow up", according to the ministry.

The second patient, a 56-years-old male Ethiopian national, was confirmed for COVID-19 and admitted to the isolation center starting on April 2 and passed away on late Sunday, according to the ministry.

The ministry, after announcing Ethiopia's first two COVID-19 related deaths, also urged the public "not to panic but to avoid any mass gatherings, apply all precaution measures."

Ethiopia, Africa's second populous nation with about 107 million total population, confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on March 13. The Ethiopian government has instituted a wide range of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the east African country. Enditem
