ALGIERS, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Altogether 20 patients have died in Algeria from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, while 45 others have been infected with the virus, health officials said on Tuesday.

Head of COVID-19 Detection and Follow-up Commission, Djamel Fourar, told reporters that the death toll hit 193 after 20 more passed away in nine provinces over the last 24 hours.

He noted that the majority of deaths were reported in capital Algiers with 44 cases, followed by Blida province with 42, while the rest have been reported in nine other provinces.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad urged all the provinces nationwide to assure the implementation and the respect of the lockdown measures.

A statement of the PM office specified that a three-day sentence and a fine would be imposed on any violation of the measures.

All-day lockdown has been imposed in the virus epicenter province of Blida. Restricted lockdown between 3 p.m. and 7 a.m. local time is underway in nine provinces, including Algiers, while partial lockdown is imposed in 38 other provinces from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. These measures would last until April 19.
