Libya to send 30 doctors to Italy to help fight COVID-19

TRIPOLI, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed government on Tuesday said it will send about 30 doctors to Italy to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Libyan Foreign Minister Mohamed Siala received a telephone call from Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio, during which they discussed the efforts to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, the Libyan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Italian minister expressed gratitude and appreciation for the Libyan government of national accord and the Libyan people for their full solidarity with Italy by sending about 30 doctors and medical assistants, the statement said.

"The minister affirmed that the Libyan government and people stand with Italy until it passes this crisis and that Libya is confident of Italy's ability to overcome this epidemic," the statement added.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Italy climbed to 135,586 on Tuesday, while the death toll surged to 17,127, according to the latest data released by the Italian government. Enditem
