BRUSSELS, April 8 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 containment efforts applied since March 18 in Belgium are beginning to bear fruit, as more people cured (524) than those of hospitalized (487) in the last 24 hours, the public health institute Sciensano said Wednesday.
This is the second time the daily number of people leaving hospital cured is more than that of those hospitalized since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The situation seems to be tending towards a peak or even a plateau, confirming the containment efforts made for weeks, according to the Sciensano Institute.
In the last 24 hours, Belgium recorded 1,209 new COVID-19 cases and 205 new deaths.
To date, the Sciensano Institute has reported a total of 23,403 cases, including 2,240 deaths, in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, between March 15 and April 7, over 9,400 patients with COVID-19 were admitted to hospital, while 4,681 were discharged.
Belgium detected its first case in early February, when one of the nine returnees from Wuhan, China, tested positive. The Belgian was discharged from the Saint-Pierre Hospital in Brussels on Feb. 15 after tests turned negative. Enditem
