BEIRUT, April 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea said Thursday that the United States does not stand behind Lebanon's economic instability.

"It is important to remember that many of the main drivers of instability in Lebanon's economy were in existence long before the pressure campaign launched by the U.S. government against Iran and its proxies in the region," Shea told Elnashra, local independent newspaper, in an interview.

Shea noted that sanctions imposed on Hezbollah's financiers aim to reduce the party's misuse of the country's financial sector while enabling Lebanon to have continuous access to international financial markets.

"We stand in solidarity with the Lebanese people in their determination to rid the system from those who transfer resources and revenues from the state to their own interests," she said. Enditem
