Morocco reports 116 new COVID-19 cases, 1,661 in total

RABAT, April 12 (Xinhua) -- A total of 116 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Morocco on Sunday, bringing the total number to 1,661, the health ministry said.

The death toll from the novel coronavirus reached 118, while the number of cured cases stood at 177, the ministry added.

The most affected regions are Casablanca, with 484 cases, Marrakech-Safi with 314, Rabat-Kenitra with 237, and Fes-Meknes with 215.

Meanwhile, the Moroccan police announced the arrest of 2,268 individuals, including 1,402 remanded in police custody, during the past 24 hours for breaching the state of medical emergency.

A total 26,579 have been arrested throughout Morocco since the declaration of the state of medical emergency, Moroccan news agency MAP reported Sunday.

On March 22, Morocco declared a one-month state of medical emergency until April 20 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Any offender will be prosecuted and liable to the legal penalties, ranging from one to three months in jail and a fine between 30 and 130 U.S dollars. Enditem
