PRAIA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The Cape Verdean Ministry of Health on Wednesday reported 45 new cases of COVID-19 infection on the island of Boa Vista, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 56 in the archipelago.

The ministry announced in a press release that 45 of a total of 196 tests done by virology laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health at Agostinho Neto hospital turned out to be positive.

All those who have a positive diagnosis are isolated and do not require intensive care, it said.

"At the moment, the contacts of these new patients are identified through active surveillance and screening for the disease," the ministry said, adding that all measures will continue to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease over the island of Boa Vista.

In order to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the president of Cape Verde declared on March 28 a state of emergency, with movement restrictions, closing of non-essential companies and all inter-island connections.

The 20-days state of emergency is ending on April 17, while President Jorge Carlos Fonseca said that he would communicate to the country on Thursday his decision on a possible extension.

So far Cape Verde has 56 confirmed cases, including 1 death and 1 cured patient. A total of 52 confirmed cases are found on the island of Boa Vista, three in the city of Praia and one on the island of Sao Vicente. Enditem
