Iraq reports 19 new COVID-19 cases, 1,434 in total

BAGHDAD, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Health Ministry on Thursday confirmed 19 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections to 1,434.

The 19 new cases during the past 24 hours, were seven in the capital Baghdad, four in Maysan, three in Sulaimaniyah and one in each of Basra, Karbala, Nineveh, Muthanna and Wasit, the ministry said in a statement.

So far, out of the total confirmed cases, 80 died and 856 others recovered, said the statement.

The Iraqi authorities have taken several measures to contain the outbreak of COVID-19, including imposing a nationwide curfew until the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to start on April 24 or 25, according to the Islamic lunar calendar.
