TOKYO, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo confirmed 107 new cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday afternoon, local media reported, pushing the total number of COVID-19 cases to 3,082 in the Japanese capital.

The 107 newly confirmed cases contain both children under the age of 10 and senior citizens in their 90s, according to government officials. Meanwhile, 67 of them have no clear infection routes, accounting for about 62 percent of all.

Tokyo has been struggling to contain a recent surge in the number of infections, as the city entered the second weekend since a state of emergency was declared, with the number of people going out continuously falling.

Across the country, the number of infections has climbed to 10,686 as of Sunday afternoon. Besides Tokyo, Osaka Prefecture recorded 1,163 COVID-19 cases, Kanagawa Prefecture 782, Chiba Prefecture 667, Saitama Prefecture 633 and 511 cases have been recorded in Hyogo Prefecture.

As the number and pace of cases continue to increase, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last Thursday declared a nationwide state of emergency over the coronavirus crisis, to cover all Japan's 47 prefectures, a vast expansion from the seven prefectures covered by the first emergency declaration made on April 7.

The state of emergency will last until May 6. Enditem
