SOFIA -- Bulgarian customs officers at the country's Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint near the border with Turkey have captured nearly 980,000 smuggled cigarettes hidden in two refrigerator trucks, authorities said here on Wednesday.

The cigarettes without excise stamps were found last Friday when the two vehicles with Ukrainian registration entered one after the other from Turkey, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a statement. (Bulgaria-Crime-Turkey)

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as energy-linked issues weighed on the market after crude oil futures in New York plummeted again overnight amid a glut that could see prices pegged low for some time.

BERLIN -- German stocks were off to a good start on Wednesday, with the benchmark DAX index rising by 120.40 points, or 1.17 percent, opening at 10,370.25 points.
