WINDHOEK, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Human Wildlife Conflict particularly involving elephants is on the increase in Namibia, senior environment officials said Thursday.

According to Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta, preliminary reports show that elephants are destroying crops and property in northern Namibia leaving most farmers destitute.

"We are seeing a major increase and we are worried. We have resolved to put down some of the elephants that are causing problems. We have also started collaring the elephants so that we can track their movements and warn farmers," Shifeta said.

He said the recent good rains have resulted in widespread crop fields and with the harvesting season approaching, the elephants are attracted by maize, mahangu, watermelons and other crops leading to escalating cases of crop destruction.

He added that the ministry had finalized a national management policy to manage the rising population of the elephants. Enditem
